Externships

Every so often IMO seeks out talented students with the relevant academic background and qualifications to provide short-term support to a specific section of the Organization.

Externships are unpaid roles that provide the opportunity for a student to accrue professional workplace experience in a specialized agency of the United Nations, in exchange for credits towards their degree. All necessary skills and requirements will be detailed in the relevant vacancy notice.

All candidates should submit a complete application package as indicated in the Policy and Procedure for Student Externs and provide the following:

  • A curriculum vitae with emphasis on academic achievement;
  • Identifying information, including visa eligibility for the United Kingdom and proof of health insurance cover. IMO is not responsible for obtaining, or assisting to obtain, any visas;
  • University, degree programme, expected year of graduation (in a form of an enrolment letter);
  • Statement of practical experience being sought and its relationship to the work of the Organization;
  • Academic credits to be received/hours of work per week at the Organization (Note: fulltime Student Externs should be expected to work a full 37.5 hour week);
  • Completion of the "Agreement to Conditions and Requirements for Student Externs" form.  The IMO Supervisor section does not need to be completed as part of the initial application.
