Statement on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2024

Statement by Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General, International Maritime Organization, on the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, 21 March 2024

Theme of the international decade: “People of African Descent: recognition, justice and development.”

"Good afternoon to all.

The International Day for Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually on 21 March, and stands as a poignant symbol of global solidarity in the fight against racism and racial discrimination. This day not only underscores the importance of acknowledging the struggles faced by individuals and communities worldwide but also calls upon us to redouble our efforts in fostering inclusivity, understanding, and respect across all borders and boundaries.

Among the important issues addressed at IMO, it is crucial to highlight the significance of embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity. I have made diversity, including racial matters, one of my priorities and I reiterate this commitment to advancing diversity and racial equality within IMO.

Our Racial Equality and Equity Group is currently revising the Secretariat’s Racial Equality and Equity Strategy and its plan of activities, including raising awareness and strengthen internal knowledge, with a view to mainstreaming diversity, equality, equity and inclusion throughout the Secretariat.

Let us continue our work for a more inclusive future for all, reaffirming our dedication to fostering a culture of diversity and equality within the maritime community.

Thank you."
