International Day for Women in Maritime - 18 May
The inaugural IMO International Day for Women in Maritime on 18 May 2022 focused on the theme "Training-Visibility-Recognition: Supporting a barrier-free working environment”.
On this day, IMO invited all stakeholders to engage in events and activities around this theme.
On social media, we focused on visibility, sharing the many faces of women in maritime, and the hashtag #WomenInMaritimeDay was used.
Message from IMO Secretary-General
In his message for the inaugural IMO International Day for Women in Maritime, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim, highlighted the relevance of gender equality.
"At IMO through training, visibility, recognition we aim to support a barrier-free working environment for Women in Maritime. Let’s work to break down barriers and ensure that we create a work environment that is enabling, supportive and inclusive of diverse participation by all, without hindrance in the maritime community," he said. The many faces of women in maritime
Women are an integral part of the maritime workforce, contributing to the success of shipping lines, ports, onshore services and more.
For the inaugural International Women In Maritime day, IMO shared the many faces of women in maritime.
Share on social media
On social media, IMO invited women in maritime to share images of themselves in their working environments.
IMO also invited allies to share images of themselves with the woman/women in maritime that make their working lives better.
The hashtag for the day was: #WomenInMaritimeDay. The platforms used were Twitter (@IMOHQ);
LinkedIn;
Instagram; and
Facebook.
Background
The IMO International Day for Women in Maritime is observed on 18 May every year. The first day is being held in 2022.
The day celebrates women in the industry and is intended to promote the recruitment, retention and sustained employment of women in the maritime sector, raise the profile of women in maritime, strengthen IMO's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality) and support work to address the current gender imbalance in maritime.
IMO Member States, the maritime industry, and all others in the maritime endeavour are invited to promote and celebrate the International Day for Women in Maritime in an appropriate and meaningful manner.
The IMO Assembly in 2021 adopted a resolution proclaiming the day.
