Science Day Symposium 2024

The Science Day symposium took place during the 47th meeting of the Scientific Group under the London Convention and the 18th meeting of the Scientific Group under the London Protocol, under the topic "CCS and experiences with the 2012 Specific guidelines for the assessment of carbon dioxide for disposal into sub-seabed geological formations", on Thursday, 18 April 2024, at IMO Headquarters in London.

  • Ms. Juhyun Park - Secretariat Ms Park has been a SPO in the Office of the London Convention and Protocol and Ocean Affairs, part of the Secretariat of the IMO, since 2023. She previously worked for the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea for over 13 years.

  • Mr. Tim Dixon - IEAGHG Tim is the Director and General Manager of IEAGHG, an international research organization focusing on carbon capture and storage (CCS). Tim has extensive experience representing CCS in UNFCCC and other international agreements since 2004. Outside IEAGHG, he is a Director on the Board for The International CCS Knowledge Centre (Canada), an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Texas in Austin (USA), an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh (UK), an original Board Member of the UK CC Research Centre, and chairs or sits on advisory committees on CCS projects and programmes around the world.

  • Ms. Heather Agnew - Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (Australia) - Ms Agnew is a director of Sea Dumping, Australian Government Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.

11:10 – 11:40 - United State’s Carbon Storage Assessment Methodology

  • Mr. Joe Maloney - Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) (United States) - Joe is a geologist in the Resource Evaluation Division of the US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s Office of Strategic Resources. He serves as a subject matter expert on offshore geologic energy and mineral resources. Recently, Joe’s experience focuses around the development and implementation of a methodology within BOEM for assessing undiscovered offshore carbon storage resources.

  • Mr. Sean Bond - American Bureau of Shipping Europe (ABS Europe) - Sean is a Director of Global Gas Solutions of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) Europe as classification professional with 35 years of experience in all aspects of Ship Classification. His main activities include client support for LNG carriers and other types of gas ship as well as gas fueled vessels (LNG and other), evaluation and interpretation of regulations pertaining to gas carriers and gas fueled ships, tracking and assessment of new gas technologies and business development on gas projects.

14:00 – 14:30 - Italian legislation and first experimental project of CO2 geological storage in a depleted gas field

  • Mr. Francesco Astorri - Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) (Italy) - Astorri graduated in Geological Sciences with a specialization in hydrogeology-hydrocarbons from La Sapienza University of Rome in 1994. With nearly 20 years of experience at ISPRA, he has extensive expertise in environmental inspections, and has played a coordinating role within the CCS National Technical Secretariat, evaluating Italy’s first Experimental Project of CO2 capture and storage, “CCS-Ravenna Hub – phase 1,” presented by ENI. He currently serves as the coordinating contact person for the preliminary investigation 

14:30 – 15:00 - Current status and vision of CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage) in the Republic of Korea

  • Dr. Yi Kyun Kwon - Kongju National University (Republic of Korea) - Dr Kwon is the Center Director of CCS Research Center in Kongju National University of the Republic of Korea, and his research Interests are carbonate sedimentology and sequence stratigraphy, seismic stratigraphy and carbon capture and storage.

15:00 – 15:20 - Regulatory regime around Norwegian CCS activities from its Environmental Agency

  • Mr Bjørn Christensen Norwegian Environment Agency (Norway) - Mr Christensen is a Senior Advisor of the Section for Petroleum and New Marine Industries, Norwegian Environment Agency.

15:40 – 16:10 - Permitting system for CO2 sequestration in sub-seabed geological formations and related trend on CCS in Japan

  • Mr. Masayuki Fujioka - Ministry of the Environment (Japan) - Mr Fujioka is an Assistant Manager, office of Policies against Marien Plastics Pollution, Marine Environment Division of the Ministry of the Environment in Japan. He is currently in charge if a Japanese permitting system for dumping wastes and CCS at sea. He is also in charge of policies and measures against marine plastics pollution, including a monitoring and data sharing of marine litters and plastics in environment.
