The 2023 IMO Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships has been applauded by international stakeholders at the recent UN Climate Change Conference COP28 held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Experts focus on life cycle GHG intensity of marine fuels
An Expert Workshop on the life cycle GHG intensity of marine fuels (GHG-EW 4) was organized by IMO on 14 and 15 December 2023 to support the further development of the IMO Life cycle GHG intensity assessment (LCA) framework. It focused in particular on sustainability, certification and third-party verification matters, in relation to marine fuels.
Statement on attacks against international shipping in Red Sea area
The IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim has issued a further statement condeming attacks against international shipping in the Red Sea area. He reiterates IMO's commitment to protecting seafarers, ships, and cargoes to ensure the safety and security of global supply chains.
Onshore Power Supply package for port stakeholders now available
A workshop package on Onshore Power Supply (OPS) for use by port stakeholders is now available. The package explains how ports can use OPS and supports the use of OPS to reduce ship emissions in ports, in line with the objectives of IMO resolution MEPC.366(79) which encourages voluntary cooperation between the port and shipping sectors to contribute to the reduction of GHG emissions from ships.
IMO history book launched
A book detailing the history of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has been published to mark 75 years since the adoption of the IMO Convention, creating for the first time a global body to promote the safety and security of shipping and the protection of the marine environment. “Safer shipping, cleaner seas - A celebration of 75 years of IMO” was launched at a farewell event for the outgoing IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim (6 December).

The IMO Assembly (A 33) has adopted a resolution commending outgoing IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim for his services over eight years. The resolution on Appreciation of the Services to the Organization of Mr. Kitack Lim commends his leadership and the many achievements of IMO during the past eight years, including the landmark adoption of the 2023 Strategy on the Reduction of Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Ships.

The IMO Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, has issued a statement on threats made to international shipping in the Red Sea, describing them as "extremely alarming and unacceptable".
Key recommendations proposed to improve Polar Code training
Argentina, along with co-sponsors Canada, Chile, Georgia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Africa and Türkiye, has tabled 14 recommendations with the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping (HTW), aimed at enhancing training programmes for seafarers who operate in polar waters.
Training seafarers for a decarbonized future
A new project is set to develop a training framework to equip seafarers with skills as shipping transitions to zero greenhouse gas emissions. The Project will work to prepare seafarers for zero or near-zero emissions ships, helping the global shipping industry to decarbonize and ensuring a just transition for seafarers.
