Marine Environment Protection of the South-East Asian Seas (MEPSEAS)

MEPSEAS is phase II of the IMO-Norad collaboration in aiming to protect the marine environment from the negative effects of ships and shipping by working in conjunction with 7 developing countries in South-East Asia. Focusing on the implementation of selected key conventions, MEPSEAS envisages the countries to have implemented their chosen convention by the Project's end in 2021 and to have put long-term plans in place that will ensure the protection of the South-East Asian Seas for years to come. 

This project implements four of IMO's key international environmental conventions: The Convention on the Control of Harmful Anti-Fouling Systems in Ships (AFS), the Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM), London Protocol and the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from ships (MARPOL) (particularly Annex V).

Sustainable Development Goals 

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development provides a shared blueprint for prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action in a global partnership. Among the SDGs, SDG 14 is central to IMO, but the work of IMO and MEPSEAS can also be linked to other SDGs, as can be seen below.

The MEPSEAS Project is currently creating training packages to assist the countries in their implementation goals. The participating countries have also shared their National Action Plans.
