Iraq accedes to maritime safety and security treaties
The Republic of Iraq has acceded to IMO treaties covering search and rescue, and safety of maritime navigation, including the International Convention on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) and the Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf (SUA PROT).

IMO agrees new guidance for safe transport of plastic pellets on ships
The IMO is advancing efforts to ensure the safe transport of plastic pellets transported on ships, which can cause damage to the marine environment if released into the sea.
Meeting from 19 to 23 February in London, IMO’s Sub-Committee on Pollution Prevention and Response (PPR 11) agreed draft recommendations for the carriage of plastic pellets by sea, along with draft guidelines for cleaning up plastic pellet spills from ships.
Red Sea project delivers port security training in Djibouti
The latest in a series of IMO maritime security workshops took place this week (20-22 February) in Djibouti under the EU-funded Regional Programme for Maritime Security in the Red Sea Area.
The Red Sea Project aims to assist participating countries in the Southern Red Sea and Gulf of Aden to enhance maritime security and safety in the Red Sea Area, in line with the 2050 Africa’s Integrated Maritime Strategy.
Supporting oil spill preparedness in Jamaica
Oil spill preparedness training is underway at a national workshop in Kingston, Jamaica (19-21 February) to help build capacity and test response systems so that necessary improvements to Jamaica's National Oil Spill Contingency Plan (NOSCP) can be identified and implemented.
